Cyril Martin on Sound – Just Another Signal?
Ubiquitous internet, cheaper and cheaper electronic devices: access to music has never been easier, or more popular. Advances in computing techniques have enabled high quality content creation at an affordable price. With broader participation, more and more technical options and a growing fan base, the world of music is not likely to go stale anytime soon!
After a brief recap of what an audio signal is, Mr Martin will lead the discussion towards the particular challenges of audio recording, mixing and playback in the computer environment. By presenting the advances in technology and their impact on studio techniques, he will highlight some of the key differences between analog and digital, and explore the do's and don'ts of setting up a proper signal chain, from the source to the auditor.
Cyril Martin is the consummate audio geek. Currently responsible for BlackBerry multimedia system architecture, he works with both internal and external contributors to establish the future of the BlackBerry platform. Before returning to Europe in 2009, Cyril worked with Apple to develop audio systems for the Macintosh, leading the computer based media revolution we witness today. His formative years were spent in Cleveland, Ohio designing both hardware and DSP software for the Omnia "on-air" audio processor.
