Karl Kliem on the visualisation of music

Using many examples Karl Kliem will speak about his minimalist abstract visualisations for musicians from the field of electronic music such as Jan Jelinek, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Lithops, Thomas Brinkmann and many others.

The multimedia artist Karl Kliem from Frankfurt has been working for several years under the name Dienststelle, primarily in the field of electronic music: For the concerts of various musicians he visualises the music in real time. In collaboration with the musicians a special modifiable design is prepared for every piece of music. During the concerts, for example the sound frequencies are analysed, which in turn control certain sections of the prepared visualisations. In doing so, Karl Kliem is no classical VJ; his visualisations do not represent any club background - they are used as the vision for the electronic music, rather than the background.

Karl Kliem studied at the well-known Hochschule für Gestaltung (University of Art and Design) in Offenbach. He developed real-time audio and visual systems and has designed the most diverse projects in the fields of multi-media, web design, and TV design, as well as music and audio production for films and interactive installations.

Karl Kliem is a founding member of Involving-Systems (1994) and MESO (1997).
