Ronni Shendar on media art and electronic music production in Israel

The complexities of Israeli society, the history of its establishment and current political conflicts are a convoluted puzzle of challenges and evolving crisis. What does it mean to be a conscious artist working within these circumstances and what are their ramifications on cultural production and artistic processes? Israeli artist Ronni Shendar co-established the c.sides festival in Israel - a non-commercial international festival for innovative electronic music and critical media art, and a platform for critical perspectives on social-political contexts. In her lecture, she will discuss the development of this and other projects in Israel, examining the impact of events such as war, Occupation, economy, politics and international affairs on personal, artistic and cultural prospects.

Ronni Shendar (b. 1979) is an Israeli photographer and media artist (among others, her video works have been shown at the Festival de Cannes and Jewish Museum Frankfurt). As a visual live performer she is touring internationally with a joint audio/ visual performance with German artist/ musician Glitterbug. In 2004 Shendar established Daila - a cross-cultural center for independent art in Jerusalem and in 2005 the c.sides festival, label and platform. Shendar splits her time between Israel and her Cologne studio.
