Music Production

The Music Production major includes seminars with Prof Werner Roth, in which the students engage in the recording of compositions of jazz and pop music in live and studio environments.

Various different recording situations are covered, from analog and computer-aided to in-the-box, taught by Timo Bader. Additionally, in Reinhard Klose’s seminar, students acquire knowledge of sound systems technology.

Jonophon – Ich dachte, Du wärst es gewesen (I thought it was you)

Herbie Hancock's title I thought it was you received a new interpretation in 2008 in a production by Jonathan Hoffmann. The recording was mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound. The project was carried out as an Elective Artistic Subject under the supervision of Professor Werner Roth and Xaver Fischer. Alongside Jonathan Hoffmann (composition, voice, synthesizer, saxophone, percussion programming, recording, processing and mixing), IMM students Janosch Brenneisen (percussion) and Matthias Maschwitz (recording assistance) as well as Alexander Steininger (electric bass) and Marlies Hoffmann (voice) were also involved.

IMM student Julian David produced, recorded and mixed four songs in stereo and 5.1 surround with the trio of the Duesseldorf percussionist Andy Gillmann. The production was supervised by IMM professor Werner Roth and took place in the IMM's sound control 2. The track Red Baron was awarded third place in the Recording Competition of the 125th AES Convention in San Francisco in the stereo jazz/blues category. A surround mix of another track won second place in the non-classical surround category. For the production, the German sales department of DPA Microphones, Mega Audio, provided a couple of premium miniature microphones. IMM student Andrew Mottl assisted in the recording, IMM student and Time Tools engineer Alex Kloss was responsible for the stereo mastering.

Steven Merson - London's Call

London's Call, a song by singer-songwriter Steven Merson, was recorded, produced and mixed by IMM student Julian David as a Sound 2 exam with Prof. Werner Roth. The surround-mixing of the same title won the first prize at 123rd AES Recording Competition in New York City in 2007. Amongst the session musicians were IMM students Markus Braun (bass) and Andrew Mottl (drums). Mastered by IMM student Alexander Kloss.
